You can go for the Kanamo Peak trek to make a short holiday in Himachal Pradesh extremely exciting and eventful. At about 5974 metres above sea level, Kanamo is the highest mountain in the Spiti Valley. Still, it is one of those peaks that can be climbed without hardcore mountaineering knowledge or experience. The trip begins from Kaza – the administrative centre of the valley – and it will first take you to the famous Ki Monastery. See the incredible wall paintings here, and later drive towards the village of Kibber. Located at an altitude of approximately 14200 feet, Kibber is one of the highest permanently inhabited human settlements on earth.
Following an overnight homestay in the village, start the Kanamo Peak trekking excursion by walking towards its base camp. Along the way, see how the grassy patches provide a scenic contrast to the almost-barren mountains of the region. Take proper rest on reaching the basecamp, and start preparing for the ultimate climb to the top. Make the ascent carefully, and after enjoying your success and looking at the region from the peak, head back to the basecamp. On reaching the campsite, travel to the Kaza town by road and end this wonderful trip.
There are some important things to keep in mind before beginning a trek to Kanamo Peak or to any other place. A hiking excursion, whether long or short is always slightly demanding, so start exercising way before starting it. Though you will get a day in Kaza and Kibber to acclimatise, it is essential that you do something to make your breathing a bit stronger. Kaza is itself about 12000 feet above sea level, and you will feel the oxygen level diminish here too. So it is highly essential not to run around, jump or exert too much in such high altitudes and tough environmental conditions.
Get yourselves checked by a doctor, if possible, prior to undertaking a trek to Mount Kanamo. Make sure that no breathing problems or heart conditions exist because they will seriously hamper your plans. Also make sure that your arm and leg joints are in prime conditions as the climb will be quite demanding. Carry sufficient warm clothes even if going in summers because the altitude of Kibber, Kaza and the peak keep the weather there considerably cold.
